Our Mission

Is there a correlation between athletic and recreational activity in youth and their academic performance?

The Core Finding

Students who are regularly physically active tend to perform better academically — not worse, despite time spent away from studying. This holds across multiple measures including GPA, standardized test scores, attendance, and graduation rates.

Why the Correlation Exists

Brain & Cognitive Function - Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates the release of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which supports memory, learning, and focus. Aerobic exercise in particular has been linked to increased hippocampal volume — the brain region central to learning.

Behavioral & Emotional Factors - Active youth tend to show better impulse control, reduced anxiety and depression, improved self-regulation, and stronger executive functioning — all of which directly support classroom performance.

Attendance & Engagement - Athletes and kids in organized recreational programs have lower dropout rates and better school attendance, in part because participation often requires maintaining academic eligibility.

Relevance to the 100 Dreams Basketball Camp

Programs that combine athletic development with academic mentorship in underserved communities have shown measurable improvements in school engagement, grades, and long-term outcomes. The "learning gap" framing in their mission aligns directly with what the research supports — physical activity as a vehicle for academic equity, not a distraction from it.
